The internet infrastructure allowing our network

Broadband in South Africa is currently not on the same level as the rest of the world. Currently we have mobile and fixed broadband. Just lately LTE was introduced to us but due to the young age of the network it is much more expensive. The fixed broadband comprises of copper and fibre cabling. Fibre is preferred for business use for the speeds it can handle. Copper is the current preferred type for home use as it is cheap. Speeds can vary from 1MB to 12MB on a single line and can increase by using a bonding method.

Currently I use a 1MB ADSL line with an uncapped, unshaped, unmetered account using a D-Link wireless router modem.

Encoding refers to the file that is being encoded with UTF-8 Unicode encoding. UTF-8 is standard and can also contain any Unicode character. UTF-8 stands for Unicode Transformation Format and the 8 means it uses 8-bit blocks to represent a character.

Social networking allows you to communicate with your friends and family online. there are many social networks. Here are a few examples:

Facebook - This is the most popular site which was created. You are able to decide who you want to be friends with. Your friends are allowed to post on you timeline and you can post on their timelines. Facebook allows you to upload picture and tag your friends in the pictures. Your friends can also tag you in the pictures they have uploaded. Many people come into contact with old school friends after many years.

Twitter - This is as popular as Facebook. You are able to follow the everyday actions of celebrities, family and friends. You are able to add pictures, compose tweets and retweet other peoples tweets.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) - This is an instant messaging allowed between BlackBerry users only. You are able to choose who you want to add on BBM or which invites you want to accept. You are able to block people you do not know. You can set a display picture and even change your status. BBM even allows you to send voice notes, pictures, music and videos to each other. If you connect you BlackBerry to Wi-Fi, you able to voice chat with your friends if they are also connected to Wi-Fi.
